Todd's Journey

The story of my cancer journey

Two more infections

- Posted in Medical Update by with comments

As you know, I ended up in Emergency over the weekend, feeling very weak, not eating, dehydrated, abdominal pain and not well overall. They thought I might be septic, so ran a bunch of tests on me, while giving me antibiotics just in case I had an infection.

The on-call Oncologist felt that the symptoms I had were more indicative of a reaction to the immunotherapy session. After some steroids I felt much better and was sent home.

While I was at the hospital they did a blood culture and urine culture to check for potential infections. Both results came back today showing I did have infections in both my blood and my urine. But the strain of infections were different. The infection in my blood is a more commonly known Staph infection that some of us naturally carry and is known to be a contaminate often in blood cultures. The urine infection is often related to a urinary tract infection, although I do not have many other symptoms of a UTI.

Nonetheless, the Doctors are now looking at what antibiotics they can put me on to fight these infections, and trying to determine if the infections are coincidence or a result of the immunotherapy (which can temporarily cause my immune system to ignore certain infections as it fights other diseases).

All in all I feel ok, and not sick at all. Will keep you posted as to what progress I make on the infection front.

Had a great chat last evening with my urological oncologist, Dr. Morash - one of the best I know - and he suggested to me that I might NOT have a bladder infection. Given my symptoms, it doesn't appear I do. But he ordered a urine culture be done, just to be sure.

My urine today has been clear and urine coloured again. So he may be right. We'll see in a few days when I get the results back from the culture.

Also met with my family doctor today, Dr. Seguin, to give her an update on my cancer journey. She seemed pleased with the progress being made, and told me there were a lot of positives to be proud of. Although I know that there is never a guarantee with chemo or cancer treatment, we are hoping the results of December 6th scans will be positive.

Feeling much less fatigued today, and on the upswing again. Ready to take on my last chemo cycle starting next Thursday.

Will keep you all posted.

Yet another bladder infection!!!

This chemotherapy is wiping me out! Seems each cycle of chemo is a bit rougher on me than the one before. I just got over a bladder infection a couple of weeks ago, and now I have yet another one.

These infections are probably occurring as my immune systems are under a lot of stress these days, and so I am prone to more infections.

I am awaiting to hear back from my urological oncologist, who will likely ask me to get another urine culture. Then will treat my infection with antibiotics again.

Hopefully after the last chemo session, my immunity will return to more normal levels over time, and I should see less infections. At least I am hoping so.

New bladder infection

Got my latest urine culture back and it appears that I have a new, and different, bladder infection from before. This is not uncommon since I am undergoing chemotherapy and my immune system is weakened, so I am more succeptible to infection.

I will have to wait until my urological oncologist decides what antibiotic I should take for this infection.

A bit of a set back as I was hoping to clear up all bladder infections but I guess I'll just have to wait.
